Chana Masala (Indian Chickpea Curry)

A rich, flavorful Indian curry made with chickpeas, tomatoes, garlic, and aromatic spices.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained
  • 2 tomatoes, diced (or 1 cup tomato puree)
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Sauté the base:
    Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add aromatics:
    Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add spices:
    Add cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chili powder. Cook for 30 seconds to release flavors.
  4. Add tomatoes:
    Add diced tomatoes or puree. Cook for 6–8 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  5. Add chickpeas:
    Stir in the chickpeas and ½ cup of water. Simmer for 12–15 minutes.
  6. Finish:
    Add garam masala and salt. Cook for 2 more minutes.
  7. Garnish & Serve:
    Top with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with rice, chapati, or naan.
