Chana Masala (Indian Chickpea Curry)
A rich, flavorful Indian curry made with chickpeas, tomatoes, garlic, and aromatic spices.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained
- 2 tomatoes, diced (or 1 cup tomato puree)
- 2 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- ½ tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Sauté the base:
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. - Add aromatics:
Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant. - Add spices:
Add cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chili powder. Cook for 30 seconds to release flavors. - Add tomatoes:
Add diced tomatoes or puree. Cook for 6–8 minutes until the mixture thickens. - Add chickpeas:
Stir in the chickpeas and ½ cup of water. Simmer for 12–15 minutes. - Finish:
Add garam masala and salt. Cook for 2 more minutes. - Garnish & Serve:
Top with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with rice, chapati, or naan.
